Heart Healthy Tip #3, Breathe!

Concluding our healthy heart focus, there is one thing our bodies stop doing when under stress, breathe! Its’ often something we don’t realize or give much thought to, but can be crucial to relaxing and relieving stress. Meditation is another good source but you need a quiet place to sit with music. This simple technique is one I love because you can do it anywhere, you don’t need any equipment, and you feel instant results. It acts as a natural tranquilizer and instantly calms the  nervous system. I learned this technique years ago from Dr. Andrew Weil and it has become a daily tool for me. Just follow these directions and it will soon become second nature.

Laughter, the new medicine…

Eating right and exercise, or lack of, aren’t the only factors that affect our risks of heart disease. Stress is moving up on the list of negative effects. We all experience stress in our lives from managing a full day of work, family, chores, finances, road rage, illness, and many others. Our bodies can usually return back to its “unstressed” natural state, but when the stress doesn’t leave and we find ourselves in this mode constantly, the danger begins. It begins to cause inflammation in our bodies, increasing our risks of heart and other diseases. So what can we do about it?

Heart health for all ages

Heart health is something to be concerned about when you are older, right? It may be inevitable if you’re genetically predisposed to it, and it would eventually lead to medications and surgery. Well that was my thinking years ago, but what if I told you that one third (1/3) of children and young adults have cholesterol >200? It’s not surprising considering the unhealthy fats and highly processed forms of sugar that find their way into most packaged foods today. The good news… you don’t have to be destined for heart troubles and you can help change your outcomes!
