The heat of summer can leave us questioning “what is the best way to hydrate in the hot summer sun”. Some food manufacturers would like us to think that sports drinks are the answer, but are they really the best option?

Sports drinks have become the drink of choice for many, from athletes, parents, and even children who may be taken in by the commercials and the bright array of colors. With a name like “sports drink” many people assume this is something that is good for them and will provide much needed electrolytes. After all, what could be the harm in drinking something related to sports? First let’s take a look at what many sports drinks are made of then scroll down to discover a great “spa” like alternative.

Sports drinks have added minerals, which are also called electrolytes, that can be depleted when performing extreme physical activity or working outdoors for hours in high heat. But along with the nutrients which consist of potassium and sodium, they can also contain a range of ingredients from high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, and artificial coloring. The bottom line, the high calories, sugar, and artificial ingredients can do more harm than good while not giving us that quenched feeling. In addition, some of the ingredients may trigger behavior, focus, and learning issues.

So what do we need? Studies have shown that unless you are engaging in intense physical activity for more than 1-2 hours a day in extreme heat, water can provide proper hydration to maintain electrolytes naturally and restore muscle glycogen after exercise while increasing your performance. The other benefits of water; helps promote clear thinking, can be naturally energizing, and so refreshing. Just keep in mind the average daily requirements of approximately 9 glasses for women and 11 glasses for men per day.

My favorite is to change ordinary water into a “spa drink” by infusing it with lemon, orange, cucumber, or watermelon slices. You can also add fresh basil leaves or rosemary sprigs from your herb garden. Sound difficult; it’s as easy as slicing some fruit and putting a sprig of rosemary in a pitcher of water, place in the refrigerator, and enjoy throughout the day! The benefits; everyone feels special and has added flavor without the calories & added ingredients!

For that special time when only carbonated drinks will do, add 1/3 cup 100% whole, natural fruit juice to carbonated water, then add frozen berries or grapes for added fun and flavor. The kids will love this!

Note:  Lemon can also help balance pH in the body as well as aid in cleansing the body of toxins.

Tip: If you do want that sports drink, read the labels and choose wisely with all natural ingredients.
