As we enter the spring season we look at our home and garden for Spring cleaning, but what about our bodies? We really have two “houses” that need to be cleaned, our home that we live in and our bodies. Just as we accumulate things in our homes, we accumulate toxins in our body that need to be cleaned out as well. With all the leafy greens and light fruits available, what better time than Spring to do this. When eating foods that are local to us and in season it helps assure us of a higher quality food. These foods help cleanse our bodies of the toxins that accumulate and help provide us with the energy to enjoy Spring, but what else can we do?

To spring clean your body, give it a break from rich and complicated foods, artificial ingredients, and added sugar. Paring down the foods you eat and eliminating some for a period of time can have great benefits like improved immune function, better digestion, increased energy, clearer focus, and breaking some food addictions like sugar.

Allergies are another part of Spring when all the beautiful plants that surround us begin to blossom. Eating local, in season foods can help to alleviate some effects of this, but also cutting back on dairy can be a big help too. If you suffer from seasonal allergies some dairy alternatives during this time are almond or rice milk, coconut milk products, and tofu which can replace dairy in some creamy desserts and other dishes. Dairy may cause some of us to be more congested, especially during allergy season.

I’ll be talking more about the effects that food ingredients can have on our bodies as well as our mood in the coming months. In the meantime Spring is a great time to take some steps to helping your body eliminate some of these things naturally.
