The holidays can be a wonderful time, but the fun and spirit of the season can easily be zapped with large “to do” lists, little time, and eating on the run! So how do we maintain a little energy so we can continue to feel the joy of the season? It can be done with a little planning and the right foods…
Keep in mind, what I’m about to share will benefit the whole family.
If you have young children, they can easily get overwhelmed with many parties, pageants, and other holiday activities. The added activities along with feeding off our stress, can drain their energy along with eating those party sweets that leave everyone crashing an hour or two later.
Planning…Everyone can benefit from a little structure and planning. Part of this; saying “NO” once in a while to manage the activities so everyone can enjoy without feeling overburdened. It’s easy to skip “planning” when your “to do” list is already large, but this is when it’s most needed! Meal planning can help to avoid the “fast food” trap and unhealthier choices on the go. Remember, when you have a plan and have the food in the kitchen, it’s easier to put something together quickly.
Foods that detoxify…The benefit of foods that naturally cleanse our bodies of toxins from food additives, processed sugars, and other ingredients we come in contact with, can help relieve those tired, bloated feelings we often feel after a few parties and goodies. Two of my favorites for keeping our bodies energized and light are adding fresh or frozen veggies, and water!
Water helps toxins flow through our body for elimination. This is especially good when enjoying some holiday “cheer”. Alternate with water and take along a bottle when heading out for shopping. You’ll be amazed at how your energy improves.
Greens help purify our blood, kidneys, and liver, while helping to balance our gut (intestinal) health to keep our immune system strong. Who wants to end up bed ridden with a cold or the flu during the holidays? Add a salad, throw some in a smoothie, or for the picky eaters you can puree in the food processor and add to sauces, soups, or crock pot meals. Adding a little can go a long way to everyone feeling more focused.
Snacks on the go…It’s easy to skip a meal and grab fast food while trying to fit it all in. Pack a healthy snack of fresh fruit, nuts, and crunchy veggies for those times when hunger occurs and you may get caught without a healthy option.
