Finding balance with the 80/20 rule…

Does living a healthy lifestyle have to be all or nothing? Absolutely not! Striving to live by the 80/20 rule can keep it healthy while allowing for those little, occasional splurges. It works like this: at least 80% of the time you consume healthy, whole foods, while the other 15-20% you may choose to eat out, have a slice of pizza, enjoy cake at a birthday celebration or some other small treat. It can also mean skipping a day of exercise to do something different like relaxing on the porch with a glass of lemonade and a good book!

Sleep, luxury or necessity…

Sleep, luxury or necessity…

Sleep is something we all love, can’t seem to get enough of, and it’s a vital part of our health. But it seems to be the first thing to go with a busy schedule. The amount of sleep each person requires can vary, especially between children and adults. What many people may not realize are the subtle impacts it can have on our mood, focus, and how we approach each day. Snacking right, part 2… Chia Seed Pudding

Snacking right, part 2… Chia Seed Pudding

Chia seeds are not just for toy pets! It’s hard to believe that the popular 1980’s fuzzy little “Chia Pet” would turn out to hold wonderful nutrients now popular in the 21st century. These seeds (not taken from the pet) are actually a great way to get part of your daily dose of fiber, protein, calcium, Omega 3 fatty acids, and many more nutrients. Adding 2 tablespoons to a morning smoothie is one of my favorite ways to enjoy them, and unlike flax seeds, they are digestible in their original state.

They not only add nutrients and fiber but also help thicken the smoothie. Another way to enjoy them are in this quick, delicious “no cook” pudding that tastes like tapioca!  Adding raw coconut or seasonal berries make it that much more delicious. This is another snack or dessert you’ll feel good about giving your children or enjoying yourself.

Creating snacks doesn’t mean making a choice between healthy or delicious. You can have it all including ones the kids will love! As we enter the spring season we look at our home and garden for Spring cleaning, but what about our bodies? We really have two “houses” that need to be cleaned, our home that we live in and our bodies. Just as we accumulate things in our homes, we accumulate toxins in our body that need to be cleaned out as well. With all the leafy greens and light fruits available, what better time than Spring to do this. When eating foods that are local to us and in season it helps assure us of a higher quality food. These foods help cleanse our bodies of the toxins that accumulate and help provide us with the energy to enjoy Spring, but what else can we do?
